Provides information on Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health disorders are one of the leading causes of disability among adolescents, affecting about one in five children in this age group.  Infants and young children can also have mental health disorders that affect their relationships and overall development; about 1 in 10 children age birth to 5 experience social and emotional problems. Getting care and support for these problems early is essential to help prevent them from getting worse or interfering with growth and learning. 

Establishes best practice standards, developed by the Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality and eight out-of-school organizations, that linked to program effectiveness and supported by research, for building social and emotional learning (SEL) skills in six areas: emotion management, empathy, teamwork, initiative, responsibility, and problem solving. This guide presents standards and indicators of SEL practice, and four curriculum features shown to be foundational for supporting SEL practices.

Offers peer-counseling, information and referrals to local resources, one-on-one support, along with support group discussions for the GLBT community.

Introduces The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453) dedicated to the prevention of child abuse. Serving the United States, its territories, and Canada, the hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with professional crisis counselors who, through interpreters, can provide assistance in over 200 languages. The hotline offers crisis intervention, information, literature, and referrals to thousands of emergency, social service, and support resources. All calls are confidential.

It describes the need to focus on building the capabilities of caregivers and strengthening the communities that together form the environment of relationships essential to children’s lifelong learning, health, and behavior.

Provides newly emerging information from two longitudinal studies about the progression of dating violence in the period between adolescence and early adulthood. Following the research presentations, there will be a presentation on the practitioner perspective on how the research findings can be used to prevent the continuation of dating violence victimization.

Presents a Florida-based website that is designed to equip patients and families with the best information, resources and tools to overcome addiction and lead a lifelong recovery.  While it provides information on Florida-based treatment centers, it gives valuable information to youth, parents and adults about addiction and treatment options.

Discusses a study on how children react to aggressive behavior based on assumed intent. The study found children who assumed a hostile intent were more likely to react aggressively than those who assumed the offender meant no harm.
