The Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) Standards for Health and Health Care were developed by the Office of Minority Health in 2000. CLAS Standards offer concrete guidance to help organizations provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate services to meet the needs of diverse populations. The goal is to advance health equity, improve quality, and help eliminate health care disparities by considering the social determinants of health and educational attainment.
This video highlights an innovative application of CLAS Standards in an educational setting. Developed by the Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS) New Hampshire State grantee, this video shares the ways in which they are embedding CLAS Standards within the foundation of public education to educate and care for the whole-child in New Hampshire.
Watch representatives from the SS/HS New Hampshire initiative describe the incremental and practical ways they are integrating CLAS Standards in their schools and how they are using SAMHSA’s Disparities Impact Statement to provide equitable access to services for all children and youth. CLAS Standards provide a framework to sustain the positive work schools are doing to meet their students’ diverse, cultural needs and help cultivate a holistic view of children and youth well-being and educational success.
