Grantees often tell us that their primary communication goal is to “raise awareness” of an issue, program, or service. Raising awareness is a critical first step with audiences who are unaware that the first few years of a child's life are critical for future health and wellness, but these kinds of education campaigns rarely “move the needle” in the right direction.
Social marketing campaigns, however, seek to change behaviors and drive actions that improve life for individuals and communities. These campaigns follow a significantly different model than awareness campaigns; instead of “educating” audiences, social marketing sets out to understand the drivers of personal behavior so that we can develop and deliver campaign messages that effectively overcome barriers to change.
